When learning becomes difficult to manage
Some young people are not attending school at all.
Others attend, but struggle to stay in lessons, manage distress, cope with emotions, or work alongside others.
For these pupils, the issue is not always subject learning. The missing piece may be the practical skills needed to manage pressure in the moment.
Calm to Class teaches those skills through structured lessons, practice and homework, helping pupils build the capacity to attend, stay, and function in a learning environment.
How progress is built
Progress is built step by step, starting from what a young person can manage and leading back to school.
A
Understanding the Starting Point
Work begins with a clear understanding of what the young person can currently manage.
Time is spent with the young person, parents and school to build a shared picture of what is getting in the way of learning.
Early lessons focus on settling, attention, and handling immediate distress.
B
Building Core Skills
Once the starting point is clear, lessons focus on the practical skills needed to manage pressure in the moment.
The teaching focuses on attention and awareness, managing distress, managing emotions, and working with others.
Lessons follow a clear structure, with taught input, supported practice and homework.
C
Applying Skills in Learning
The final stage focuses on using the skills in real learning situations.
This may include staying in lessons, managing routines, communicating with adults, working alongside others, and taking part more consistently.
The aim is for the young person to attend, stay, and function in learning with practical skills they can continue to use.

Peter Rainford
Led by a former headteacher in a CAMHS education setting.
Extensive experience working with young people who are out of school or struggling to access learning, including those with complex mental health needs and a history of significant trauma.
This work is based on what consistently prevents pupils from attending and staying in school, and the skills that allow them to return.
The focus is on practical teaching, helping a young person build a routine and re-engage with learning over time.
