Building the skills to stay engaged in learning
Structured lessons that teach practical skills for managing distress, emotions, attention, and interaction within learning environments.
For young people experiencing anxiety, overwhelming emotions, school avoidance, or difficulties remaining engaged in education.
What Calm to Class provides
Calm to Class provides structured, lesson-based work focused on helping young people function more effectively within learning environments.
The work is practical and skills-based. Lessons focus on attention, emotional regulation, distress management, and working with others.
This is not a tuition service and does not focus on curriculum catch-up. The aim is to build the capacity to attend, remain, engage, and participate in learning.
What is being taught
Lessons build practical skills across four areas.
Attention and awareness
bringing attention back to a task
noticing distraction and avoiding it
Managing distress
staying in the room when it feels difficult
working through short periods of discomfort
Managing emotions
recognising rising emotional responses
slowing reactions and maintaining control
Working with others
responding to instruction
managing interactions with adults
maintaining engagement without escalation
These skills are taught directly within lessons and built through repeated practice.
How progress is built
Work begins from what a young person can currently manage.
Early lessons may focus on attention, routine, reducing avoidance, and managing immediate emotional distress. Over time, the work develops towards greater emotional control, increased engagement, and participation alongside others.
The aim is gradual, sustainable progress within education rather than short-term compliance.
Where learning takes place
Lessons can take place at home, online, or in a small group, depending on what your child can manage.
The structure and approach remain the same in each setting.
Common Questions
Is this tutoring?
No. Calm to Class teaches practical skills needed to function within learning environments. The focus is not curriculum delivery or catch-up teaching.
Does my child need a diagnosis?
No. Some young people have formal diagnoses and some do not. The starting point is the difficulty they are currently experiencing within education.
Will this return my child to school?
The work is designed to build the skills needed to attend, remain, and engage within education. Progress depends on the young person’s starting point and the level of support around them.
How long does this take?
This is a time-limited piece of work focused on building capacity, not long-term provision. The length depends on your child’s starting point and is reviewed as progress is made.
What age range is this for?
Calm to Class currently offers two lesson pathways.
One pathway is designed for younger learners in Years 5 to 8.
A second pathway is designed for learners in Year 9 onwards, including post-16 learners.
The structure and aims remain similar across both, but the teaching approach, examples, and level of discussion are adapted to the learner’s stage and level of understanding.
